20世紀後半に於ける声楽教育のパイオニア。彼自身リリックなテノールで、チューリヒ歌劇場で4年間リードテノールとして活躍、1957年アメリカに戻り多くのオペラコンサートに出演する傍ら、40年以上にわたってオベーリン音楽院で又アメリカのみならずヨーロッパのいろいろな地区で教育者として活動する。
又、著作も多く、教科書的な存在となるものも含まれる。
